  • As per the CNO, medications administered via the topical route are not a controlled act. Therefore, nurses do not need to delegate topical medication administration to PSWs.<\/li>\n
  • Allow the client to do as much as they can independently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    PSW Considerations:<\/h3>\n

    Report to the office at 416-635-2860 if the client has signs of:<\/p>\n

    • Pain<\/li>\n
    • Tenderness<\/li>\n
    • Hair loss\/ hair thinning<\/li>\n
    • Weak hair and breakages<\/li>\n
    • Persistent itchiness on scalp<\/li>\n
    • Broken skin\/ bleeding<\/li>\n
    • The client has lice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Medicated shampoo<\/li>\n
      • 2 Bath towels<\/li>\n
      • Client\u2019s clothing<\/li>\n
      • Soap and water (hand hygiene)<\/li>\n
      • Gloves<\/li>\n

        Procedure for administering medicated shampoo:<\/h3>\n
          \n
        1. Check the care plan via your mobile device.<\/li>\n
        2. Verify it is the right client before beginning the treatment.<\/li>\n
        3. Gather and set up all the necessary supplies for the client\u2019s shower.<\/li>\n
        4. Wash hands thoroughly with soap. Put on gloves.<\/li>\n
        5. Assist the client with a safe transfer onto the bath chair.<\/li>\n
        6. Wet the client\u2019s scalp and hair.<\/li>\n
        7. Apply the medicated shampoo onto the client\u2019s scalp with gloved hands.
          \na. Place one hand on the client\u2019s forehead to prevent shampoo from getting into the client\u2019s eyes.
          \nb. Using the other hand, gently rub all areas of the scalp for approximately 1 minute.
          \nc. Leave the shampoo on the client\u2019s scalp while you assist with washing the rest of the client\u2019s body.
          \nd. Rinse the scalp thoroughly after washing the body.
          \nNote: Rinse the shampoo off immediately after washing the scalp if instructed to do so by the client, CSS, doctor, or pharmacist.
          \ne. Repeat shampooing of the scalp if instructed to do so.
          \nNote: If the client missed a dose of the medicated shampoo, do not use two doses at once.<\/li>\n
        8. Support the client with a safe transfer out of the shower.<\/li>\n
        9. Remove gloves. Wash hands thoroughly.<\/li>\n
        10.
