Report before end of day to the office at 416-635-2860 if the following is observed or identified:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no urine in the drainage bag (normal urine output is 30 cc\/hr)<\/li>\n<li>Urine has blood, pus, or discolouration (i.e., cloudy, pink, red-tinged)<\/li>\n<li>Urine has an abnormal or foul odour<\/li>\n<li>Pain in the flank (just below the rib cage and above the waist on either side of the back)<\/li>\n<li>Pain or burning while urinating<\/li>\n<li>A frequent urge to urinate without being able to pass much urine<\/li>\n<li>Client has a fever or chills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Before procedure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inspect the client\u2019s skin integrity before proceeding (i.e., bleeding, sores, redness, lumps etc.). Wash hands thoroughly with soap. Put on gloves.<br \/>\n2. Place a towel, cloth, or disposable pad under the connection to catch any leaks..<br \/>\n3. Disconnect the catheter from the tubing of the urine bag.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not tug on the catheter end.<\/li>\n<li>Do not touch the tube or catheter ends as you disconnect them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. Using a cleansing solution, wash:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The connector<\/li>\n<li>The end of the drainage bag tubing<\/li>\n<li>The tubing end of the replacement bag (if the bag is not sterile)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5. Securely attach the tubing of the bag to the catheter. Ensure that the drainage clamp is in the locked\/closed position.<br \/>\n6. Cap the tubing end of the urine bag just removed.<br \/>\n7. Check the catheter and drainage tubing to ensure there is no twisting of either supplies.<br \/>\n8. Remove gloves and wash hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emptying the Urine Drainage Bag<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap. Put on gloves.<br \/>\n2. Be sure to keep the drainage bag below the level of the bladder (approximately at the hip) to prevent backflow of urine.<br \/>\n3. Empty the bag into the toilet unless otherwise directed.<br \/>\n4. Carefully open the clamp at the bottom of the bag to empty it. Do not allow the clamp to touch the toilet.<br \/>\n5. Clean the connector using the cleansing solution, if available.<br \/>\n6. Securely close the clamp to prevent leaking. Do not put the drainage bag on the floor.<br \/>\n7. Remove gloves and wash hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cleaning the Drainage Bag<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap. Put on gloves.<br \/>\n2. Disconnect the catheter from the urine bag. Do not tug on the catheter end.<br \/>\n3. Using a plastic squirt bottle, rinse the urine bag and tubing with water.<br \/>\n4. Use either one of the solutions below to clean the drainage bag:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vinegar solution: 1 part vinegar to 3 parts cold water, or<\/li>\n<li>Bleach solution: 1 part bleach to 10 parts cold water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8260 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/psw.circleofcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/changing-drainage-bag-300x205.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psw.circleofcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/changing-drainage-bag-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/psw.circleofcare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/changing-drainage-bag.png 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>5. Pour the solution into the urine bag and tubing. Shake for 30 seconds and then drain the solution out of the bag.<br \/>\n6. Allow the bag to air dry.<br \/>\n7.
