Other names for this product include external urinary catheter and penile sheath catheter.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;in_container&#8221; full_screen_row_position=&#8221;middle&#8221; column_margin=&#8221;default&#8221; column_direction=&#8221;default&#8221; column_direction_tablet=&#8221;default&#8221; column_direction_phone=&#8221;default&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; row_border_radius=&#8221;none&#8221; row_border_radius_applies=&#8221;bg&#8221; overflow=&#8221;visible&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243; gradient_direction=&#8221;left_to_right&#8221; shape_divider_position=&#8221;bottom&#8221; bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221;][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_tablet=&#8221;inherit&#8221; column_padding_phone=&#8221;inherit&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; column_element_spacing=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; column_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_radius=&#8221;none&#8221; column_link_target=&#8221;_self&#8221; column_position=&#8221;default&#8221; gradient_direction=&#8221;left_to_right&#8221; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243; tablet_width_inherit=&#8221;default&#8221; tablet_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; phone_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; animation_type=&#8221;default&#8221; bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221; border_type=&#8221;simple&#8221; column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]\n<h3>CSS Considerations:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Establish a baseline assessment of the condition of the penis.<\/li>\n<li>Determine the status of the client\u2019s fluid intake and any fluid intake restrictions.<\/li>\n<li>The CSS should prioritize follow-up with clients or substitute decision makers with any PSW reports of adverse findings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>PSW Considerations:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep the drainage bag below the level of the client\u2019s bladder (abdomen) at all times.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure the tubing is free of kinks or loops and that the client is not lying on it.<\/li>\n<li>Do not pull or tug on the catheter.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use powder around the catheter site.<\/li>\n<li>Check the skin around the catheter site for signs of irritation.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage fluid intake if the client does not have a fluid restriction.<\/li>\n<li>Notify the office at 416-635-2860 immediately if any of the following are observed:\n<ul>\n<li>Blood, cloudiness, or foul odour<\/li>\n<li>Decreased urine output<\/li>\n<li>Irritation, redness, tenderness, swelling, drainage, or leaking<\/li>\n<li>Fever or chills<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal or flank (lower back) pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If any of the above issues are observed, do not apply the condom catheter. Discard the used catheter in the garbage.<br \/>\nb. Empty the urine from the urine collection bag and clean the bag following the established cleaning process.<br \/>\nc. Leave the bag to air dry.<\/li>\n<li>Provide perineal care with soap and water and dry thoroughly.<\/li>\n<li>Remove and discard gloves in the garbage. Perform hand hygiene and apply clean gloves.<\/li>\n<li>Proceed with the condom catheter application if the skin is intact with no irritation or sores.<\/li>\n<li>Apply the skin-prep solution, if using, to the skin and pubic area.<\/li>\n<li>8. Ensure the foreskin is not retracted in uncircumcised clients.<\/li>\n<li>9. Place the condom catheter on the tip of the penis and unroll it to the base, leaving 1 to 2 inches between the tip of the penis and the end of the condom catheter.<\/li>\n<li>Wrap the sheath holder around the condom catheter at the base of the penis.<br \/>\na. Do not wrap the sheath holder too tightly because this may stop blood circulation.<br \/>\nb. Always ask the client if they are comfortable after the sheath is applied.<\/li>\n<li>Connect the condom catheter to the tube of a clean, dry urine collection bag.
