Coming Up Soon…
JUNE
June is Pride Month, National Indigenous Month, Italian Heritage Month, & Portuguese Heritage Month
June 10: Portugal Day
June 15: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEEAD)
June is National Indigenous Month
In June, we commemorate National Indigenous History Month. During this month, we can take time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples across Canada. Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs. In cooperation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21, the summer solstice, for National Aboriginal Day, now known as National Indigenous Peoples Day. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on, or near, this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.
Canadians live on Indigenous territory. First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have strong relationship with and tremendous contributions to this land that extends back tens of thousands of years – before any other groups came into Canada. Their own unique culture, traditions, lifestyles and strength help to shape Canada as a place we all call home today. Most, if not all, of Parks Canada special natural and cultural places have been traditionally used by Indigenous Peoples long before Canada became a country. These culturally significant sites are as vital as ever to Indigenous culture and connection to the land. Many heritage sites honour Indigenous histories and connections through the site name. We appreciate Indigenous groups sharing the land with us and we celebrate their heritage and achievements. At the same time, we are proud of how diverse and welcoming the place we are living in is.

Champions of Care Nominations
Congratulations to this week’s Champions of Care nominees:
- “I would like to express how valuable Revital Shuster is to the organization. She is amazing and I am grateful for her advice and everything she says to me. I just want to validate her work and to say that she is a very good Social Worker; she really helps me and I want to say thank you with all my heart.” – Client
- “Recently, Elinor Gal received an urgent referral to assist a client with relocating from a temporary accomodation in a retirement home, where she resided for a couple of months following a fire that had destroyed her apartment. Although she spent two months in a hospital and then two more at this residence, she did not have a plan in place and none of her previous service providers were able to put one in place for her. This client is bound to a wheelchair, has limited income, and had no family involved at the time. Elinor was given notice of the client’s situation on a Thursday afternoon, and the client had to be out of the retirement home by Sunday. Very quickly, Elinor connected with the client, who was not ready to make any decisions, and her daughter in Scotland, who has many issues herself – and couldn’t deal with her mother’s situation at the time. Elinor reached out to other service providers, but they were unable to assist financially or logistically in this situation. Elinor advocated with the retirement home and was able to extend the client’s stay for a few more days. Elinor connected with the client’s niece – who was able to collect money to pay for that extra week in the home, and got her a bed to sleep in the new subsidized apartment. Elinor coordinated the help of a Circle of Care volunteer, who escorted the client to her new place, and obtained emergency meals and transportation vouchers to get there through Circle of Care. The client is now safe in her new place. Shortly after, a new crisis occurred as another client requested Elinor’s support to pay for rent and moving costs, as he was going to be evicted. He was on a very limited income and was unable to pay for rent or moving expenses. Elinor has been instrumental in facilitating the access to subsidized housing for this client and his little child. Despite the lack of supports available in the community, her determination and advocacy skills paid off as she was finally able to get help from several community organizations – including Circle of Care – to assist this client financially and with food. This was a time sensitive situation and Elinor went above and beyond to help this client and his child. Thank you Elinor for all the amazing work you do for clients!” – Patricia Wendy
