Why I Got Vaccinated: Edith’s Story

This summer, we’re sharing a series called Why I Got Vaccinated, highlighting the stories of Circle of Care Personal Support Workers and Homemakers who have been vaccinated. Today, we’re sharing Edith H.’s story. Edith is one of Circle of Care’s union stewards. Edith received her first dose in February and received her second dose more recently.

How did you feel about getting the COVID vaccine?

I didn’t have any fears about getting vaccinated. I was confident enough about getting the vaccine. This was because I was mostly monitoring other people close to me who have received the vaccination and I came to the conclusion that if I took the vaccine, I wasn’t in any serious danger.

Why did you decide to get vaccinated?

I work in a field where I’m with vulnerable people. If I don’t take care of myself, then how can I take care of them? If I’m not healthy, then I can’t help my clients, I can’t help others because I may infect them. I would not be comfortable with myself if I were to do that to them.

Did you experience any side effects from your vaccination?

Yes. On my first dose, I had a fever and chills, but I took a Tylenol and after that day I was good. I didn’t experience any side effects on my second dose. Honestly, I was expecting more side effects because of what was posted on social media. But, I only got a fever and chills, which was manageable.

How did you feel after being vaccinated?

I am as happy as I was before. I still wear my mask wherever I go and I still don’t let myself get too close to others. But, at least now I feel more comfortable to travel.

What are you looking forward to now that you’ve been vaccinated?

I’m looking forward to seeing my mother as I couldn’t before.
