Have a Safe & Happy Diwali!

Diwali, known as the “festival of lights” in India, is a celebration of the victory of good over evil. Diwali will be observed on October 24 this year. The main Diwali celebration takes place on the third day of a five-day festival throughout the majority of India, and is also celebrated by millions around the world.

Here is a summary of key events that are celebrated during the five-day festival:

  • Day One: To help bring good fortune, people clean their homes and go shopping for gold or kitchenware.
  • Day Two: People use clay lamps to decorate their homes, and they use coloured sand or powder to make the rangoli floor designs.
  • Day Three: On the festival’s main day, family congregate for Lakshmi puja, a prayer to the goddess Lakshmi, which is followed by delectable feasts and fireworks displays.
  • Day Four: On the first day of the new year, friends and family drop by with gifts and holiday greetings.
  • Day Five: Married sisters receive visiting brothers with love and a beautiful feast

Healthy Habits to Help Prevent the Flu

mug, eye-glasses, and tissues

The best way to prevent severe illness from the flu virus this fall is to get the flu vaccine. It may also help you avoid unnecessary health care visits or as well as prevent the need for isolating if you have symptoms. Get vaccinated by contacting your local pharmacist or health care provider.

We also recommend that you:

  • avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • avoid others when you yourself are sick
  • stay home from work if you have symptoms
  • practice good hand hygiene by washing hands frequently
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing

Practicing other good health habits like cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, especially when someone is ill, and getting plenty of sleep, drinking lots of fluids, eating nutritious food, and managing stress can also help protect and prevent against getting sick
