MSD Prevention Techniques

Keeping good posture 4 isometric compositions with proper and wrong lifting techniques isolated vector illustration

‘Body mechanics’ is a general term that is used to explain an effort coordinated by the body’s muscles, bones, and nervous system. Body mechanics can be good or bad, and can be directly related to back pain and other physical issues. Using correct body mechanics will help you avoid musculoskeletal strain, injuries to yourself or your client, and tiredness.

Basic Body Mechanic Rules to keep in mind to prevent MSDs:

  1. Keep the lower portion of your back in its normal position at all times (not bent)
  2. Do not twist your body – instead always use a side step or pivot to move your torso, from your shoulders to your hip, as one solid unit
  3. Set your feet into a comfortable and solid wide base of support when lifting. Having a wide base of support gives your body more stability.
  4. Keep your head upright and hold your shoulders up
  5. Maintain a stable center of gravity to evenly distribute your body weight
  6. Keep your center of gravity low, bend your knees and keep your body straight rather than bending your back or your head
  7. Hold items close to your body to lower the effect of their weight
  8. Bend at your hips and knees instead of your waist to help keep your balance and divide weight easily between upper and lower body
  9. Pay attention to your limits; don’t try to do more than you can handle.

How much can one do, to be nominated for Champions of Care?

Circle of Care’s Champions of Care program is designed to celebrate employees who go above and beyond their daily tasks, and who demonstrate a deep commitment to our values of person-centred care, excellence, accountability, collaboration, equity and innovation. Nominations can be made by other staff members, by supervisors, and by clients and their families. We understand that this system is not perfect, as some supervisors/coordinators are more diligent about nominating PSWs on their teams than others. We continue to work with our CSSs and Service Coordinators to encourage them to nominate PSWs from their teams. If you see a fellow PSW doing an excellent job in their role, you can nominate them! Post your nomination to Applause in the newsfeed, and be sure to be detailed in your nomination.

What is the SEIU BEN DED and SEIU ER COST deduction on our paystub?

The SEIU ER COST is the cost that Circle of Care is paying on your behalf for your union health benefits.

The SEIU BEN DED is your deduction for the same benefits (the amount that you pay towards those benefits).
