The Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) would like to encourage all employees to review the information in this post related to Slip, Trip and Fall (STF) hazards. It is important to be aware of this information, as Slips, Trips and Falls have been designated as ‘high-risk’ hazards, as our employees often travel multiple times throughout the day to arrive at their client’s homes to provide services. Slips, trips and falls, can also contribute to minor injuries (such as sprains/sprains), and to more serious injuries (such as fractures, bone breaks, or concussions).

To prevent slips, trips and falls, the following safety precautions are recommended:

  • Always be aware of what’s happening around you. Do not let objects you are carrying block your view.
  • Watch for changing floor conditions (wet to dry, rough to smooth and uneven surfaces) that might make you lose traction.
  • Keep floors clear of clutter. Remove any clutter or shoes, papers, toys or items in the home.
  • Clean up any spills you see. Wipe any visible spills to prevent a slippery walking surface.
  • Tuck electrical cords away and smooth out bumps in rugs and mats.
  • Always use installed light sources that provide sufficient light for your tasks. Use a flashlight if you enter a dark room where there is no light.
  • Wear appropriate shoes that has been approved by the organization’s footwear policy. This may include slip-resistant shoes, supportive and comfortable footwear.
  • Log or report anything that looks to be hazardous to your supervisor.

All employees have been enrolled into an e-learning course through Dayforce that focuses on slips, trips and falls awareness and prevention. We would ask that all employees complete this mandatory e-learning module by November 1, 2023.  All employees that complete the mandatory e-learning will receive 30 minutes of paid training time (which will be paid out in November).

We will also be hosting 30 minute education sessions through Zoom focused on slip, trip and fall awareness, and invite you to attend one of the upcoming sessions:

Friday, October 6th @ 2:00pm
Meeting ID: 458 679 4619
Passcode: 4211

Tuesday, October 10th @ 11:00 am
Meeting ID: 458 679 4619
Passcode: 4211

We also encourage you to review of Safe Footwear policy, to better understand what type of footwear is required to keep you safe and reduce slips, trips and falls. As we head into the Winter months, and anticipate additional hazards related to snow and ice, it is important that you are wearing winter boots when travelling to your client’s homes.  Winter boots can be purchased a discounted rate through our Employee Perks Program (Perkopolis).
