The Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) would like to encourage all employees to review the information in this post related to Slip, Trip and Fall (STF) hazards. It is important to be aware of this information, as Slips, Trips and Falls have been designated as ‘high-risk’ hazards, as our employees often travel multiple times throughout the day to arrive at their client’s homes to provide services. Slips, trips and falls, can also contribute to minor injuries (such as sprains/sprains), and to more serious injuries (such as fractures, bone breaks, or concussions). This is especially true during the winter months, when ice, rain and snow contribute additional hazards. Please note there is a currently a Snowfall Warning in effect with 15cm of snow forecasted.

To prevent slips, trips and falls, the following safety precautions are recommended:

  • Wear appropriate footwear. Choose boots with non-slip soles and good traction, ideally with a grip for ice.
  • Walk carefully. Take short, deliberate steps, keeping your center of gravity on your feet. Walk slowly and do not rush. Use your arms to maintain your balance.
  • Use Handrails for support. Hold onto the rails when using stairs or ramps (especially outdoors).
  • Be Mindful of surfaces. Watch for black ice (which is hard to see) – so use the preventions outlined above. Avoid walking on icy patches. Be cautious around doorways, entrances or areas where snow or ice may have melted.
  • Pay attention to weather conditions. Check the weather before heading out to be better prepared.

Our JHSC would also like to remind anyone who has not yet completed the mandatory e-learning module for Slips, Trips and Falls prevention, to please complete this by April 1, 2025. Please log into your Dayforce learning to access the course. This training is paid time. You would have received an email earlier this week if you have not yet completed the training.
