Understanding Signs and Symptoms of Preventable Diseases

Mumps spreads mainly through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through direct contact with their saliva—like sharing drinks or utensils. Common symptoms include swelling on one or both sides of the face (parotitis), fever, headache, earache, feeling tired, muscle aches, trouble talking, chewing or swallowing, and loss of appetite.
Tetanus is a serious infection caused by bacteria that can enter your body through even the tiniest cut. Once inside, it can affect your nerves and muscles. That’s why it’s important for all adults to get a tetanus booster every 10 years to stay protected.
Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that usually hits the nose and throat. It can cause a thick, grey coating in your throat or on your tonsils, along with a sore throat, hoarseness, swollen neck glands, trouble breathing, nasal discharge, fever, and chills. It’s serious—but preventable.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection. If you haven’t been vaccinated or haven’t had it before, you’re at risk. The virus lives in the nose and throat of an infected person and spreads through coughs, sneezes, or even just breathing nearby. You can also catch it by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Hepatitis A is a short-term liver infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV). It can bring on symptoms like fever, tiredness, nausea, and stomach pain.
Hepatitis B affects the liver too, but it can become long-term. Symptoms often look like the flu—fever, muscle aches, and fatigue—along with stomach pain, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), and dark urine.
If you, or a family member, are experiencing any of these signs and symptoms – you should remain off of work and consult your family doctor.

Ask Us Anything
If you have concerns about a client/situation or questions about your role, we encourage you to contact your Client Services Supervisor.
If I work an average of 30 hours plus a week and have worked for 10 months can I be eligible for an offer letter to show I work full time and be eligible for the company to fill out an employer form for the home health care pilot program?
Thanks for your inquiry about the Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots – applications through the Government of Canada for 2025 have now closed. We encourage you to always reach out to HRDept@circleofcare.com for any documentation needs and our team will work to get you the paperwork to meet application requirements.
Why are PSWs asked to do deep house cleaning for 2 hours? I thought that was the work scope for Homemakers.
Deep house cleaning is not within the scope of practice for a PSW, nor for a Homemaker. Here is a list of prohibited (not allowed) tasks for both PSWs and Homemakers: https://psw.circleofcare.com/index.php/psw-scope-of-duties/
If you are being asked to do cleaning that involves moving furniture or any large or heavy object, taking care of a client’s pet, or any of the other items included on the page linked above, make sure to let your CSS know so they can have a conversation with the client and let them know that they can’t ask you to perform those tasks.
Does a PSW go shopping for clients too?
Yes, a PSW is able to go grocery shopping for a client. This would need to be included as part of the care plan first.
What is the role of a Homemaker?
Homemakers are an unregulated profession like PSWs; however, there is no requirement for any formal training or study program. Homemakers can only assist with instrumental activities of daily living. Homemakers are responsible for keeping a client’s home clean, safe, and well organized in addition to helping with grocery shopping and laundry.
