With the City of Toronto currently under another heat alert, we want to remind all of our Personal Support Workers  and Homemakers working in the community to take extra care while travelling between client visits and providing care.

High temperatures can pose serious health risks, especially for those spending time outdoors or in homes without air conditioning. Please take the following steps to help stay safe and cool:

Heat Safety Tips for Working in the Community

  • Stay Hydrated – Carry a refillable water bottle and drink frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  • Dress Smart – Wear light-coloured, breathable, and loose-fitting clothing.

  • Take Breaks – Find cool or shaded areas between visits when possible. Sit down and rest if you’re feeling overheated.

  • Avoid Overexertion – Pace yourself when walking or climbing stairs, especially during peak heat hours (11 a.m. – 3 p.m.).

  • Use Cooling Items – Consider carrying a portable fan, damp cloth, or cooling towel.

  • Check the Environment – If a client’s home is particularly warm or lacks ventilation, and you have concerns for their safety or yours, please inform your supervisor right away.

  • Watch for Signs of Heat Stress – Dizziness, headache, rapid heartbeat, confusion, nausea, or excessive sweating are warning signs. Seek shade, rest, and medical attention if needed.
