This is a message to all Personal Support Workers and Homemakers from your Joint Health and Safety Committee.
As the days grow shorter at this time of year, we want to remind everyone of some important safety tips for travelling within the community. Last year, we saw an increase in motor vehicle to pedestrian accidents during this season, and we want to ensure all employees feel informed and prepared.
To help reduce the risk of illness or injury, we’re sharing some best practices for staying safe—particularly as a pedestrian.
- Improve your visibility: with the changing seasons – days are becoming darker. We would recommend that when it is dark outside you wear bright and reflective clothing so that motorists can see you.
- Cross at designated cross walks: only cross streets at designated cross sites (intersections with stop lights and stop signs).
- Be aware of your surroundings: we recommend that you wait to make eye contact with drivers and cross when they see you. You could also indicate with your hand that you are looking to cross. Look both ways before you cross the street.
