The number of COVID-19 cases is increasing daily in Ontario. As a result it is becoming more and more likely that you will, at some point, be caring for a client with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.

We understand that this may cause you anxiety or fear. This Q & A is meant to provide you with support and guidance as you continue your essential work in the community.

Why do clients with COVID-19 need to be provided with personal support?

Our healthcare system is dealing with a hard situation right now. The province is worried that hospitals might run out of beds to care for critically ill patients with COVID-19.

It is important for us, as a community organization, to provide as much support as possible to our clients to keep them out of the hospital. This includes clients with COVID-19 who do not have life-threatening symptoms.

I have been informed that one of my clients has COVID-19. How do I prepare to care for this client?

If you are asked to care for a client with COVID-19, you will be provided with full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This includes goggles, gloves, mask, and gown. You must wear all of this equipment properly, as it will keep you safe from infection. This is the same equipment that hospitals use when they are caring for COVID-19 patients.

Before your first visit with a COVID-19 client, your CSS will connect with you to review precautions and answer any questions you may have. They will also confirm that you have the PPE you need to protect yourself.

My client doesn’t have COVID-19, but another person in their home does (or is suspected to have COVID-19). What should I do?

Put on full Personal Protective Equipment before you enter the home.

Caring for clients with COVID-19 causes me a lot of anxiety and fear. What should I do?

We want you to feel confident in your training and infection prevention techniques when you enter the home of someone with COVID-19. Your health and safety is our number one priority when providing care to clients.

Here are some steps you can take:

1. Practice donning and doffing correctly to give yourself an added boost of confidence in your skills. (See below for a video on donning/doffing gloves, as well as some job aids regarding donning/doffing other equipment).

2. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your CSS.

3. If you still have very high levels of anxiety or fear, we invite you to access the Employee Assistance Plan, which is free to all PSWs. Call 1-800-387-4765. They can help you with counseling and mental health support. This service is confidential – Circle of Care does not find out who has used this service.
