Using “Two-Factor Authentication” Before Providing Care
Circle of Care uses a “two factor authentication” approach when working with clients, meaning that TWO (2) pieces of information about the client must be confirmed before you provide care or information.
Before you provide care in the home you must:
- Confirm the full name of the client with the client directly or with a Substitute Decision Maker or POA
- Confirm the address of the client, either with the client, or by checking it yourself
When engaging with clients and families to confirm their identity, explain why you are doing so. It demonstrates care for their safety.
Why confirm two pieces of information?
By confirming two (2) pieces of information about the client, we can ensure that clients are receiving the service or information intended for them. This helps avoid:
- Medication errors
- Errors in care
- Discharging the wrong client from a service
- Privacy breaches
What if I know the client well?
When you have a long-term relationship providing personal care for a client, then facial recognition is acceptable as a way of confirming the client’s identity.
