Burnout: Know When You’ve Had Enough
Burnout is a stress condition brought on by being involved in an intense situation for a long period of time without enough rest and recreation. For many of us, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is a risk factor for burnout.
Common symptoms of burnout can include:
- Feeling numb about work-related activities: It becomes hard to care about your work when you are experiencing burnout.
- Physical symptoms: Chronic stress may lead to physical symptoms, like headaches and stomachaches or intestinal issues.
- Emotional exhaustion: Burnout causes people to feel drained, unable to cope, and tired. They often lack the energy to get their work done.
- Reduced performance: Individuals with burnout feel negative about tasks. They have difficulty concentrating and often lack creativity.
Tips for managing burnout
- Set aside time in your day for relaxation exercises such as stretching or meditation.
- Write down key values and things in your life that you are grateful for.
- Be connected and engaged with friends and family.
- Practice healthy habits such as healthy eating, drinking plenty of water, getting adequate sleep and exercising.
- Talk to your friends, family, colleagues about your feelings. Don’t let anger, despair or frustration build up.
- Recognize when you’re pushing yourself too hard and depleting your inner resources.
New Year, Positive Attitude
Start the New Year off in a positive mindset! The phrase “the only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude” is a testament to how important your mindset can be. Try to recognize negative thought patterns and when they happen, counter them with positive thoughts or affirmations.
