The war between Russia and Ukraine has now entered its second month. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced from their homes and have fled for safety in neighbouring countries. Images of violence and heartbreak continue to be reported on daily in the news. This can be overwhelming to see and hear about. If you need to speak with someone, we encourage you to reach out to your supervisor or to Human Resources for support.

Discussing the Russo-Ukrainian War at Work

Please keep in mind that the Russo-Ukrainian War can be a sensitive and upsetting topic for many people, especially those who have experienced war firsthand, or who have family who are being impacted directly by the events currently taking place. Please be sensitive to your own emotions on this topic, as well as those of your colleagues, clients, or their family members. If your colleague or client expresses a desire to change the subject, please honour that request.

And if you yourself do not wish to speak about the war, here is some sample language you can use if this topic is brought up: “This is a sensitive, emotional, and upsetting topic for many people, and so I would ask if we could discuss something else instead.” In most situations, the other person will be respectful of this request.
