Safety Risk Assessment (ROP)
Circle of Care clients receive a home safety risk assessment at the beginning of service and during all subsequent reassessments. Risk assessments are also conducted by the CSS when workers identify new concerns within the client home. Safety Risk Assessments are a Required Organizational Practice, required by Accreditation Canada.
What does the home safety risk assessment involve?
The home safety risk assessment includes:
- Review of internal and external physical environments such as mold, extreme temperatures, presence of bed bugs or other pests, etc.
- Chemical, biological, fire and falls hazards
- Medical conditions requiring special precautions
- Emergency preparedness such as presence of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Other safety concerns (such as presence of drugs or weapons or abusive behavior from clients, caregivers or family).
How is the risk assessment used?
Information from the home safety risk assessment is used when planning and delivering client services, and is shared with members of the client’s care team as appropriate.
Client Safety
As part of the home assessment and ongoing care delivery, clients and families are educated on home safety issues identified in the risk assessment and how to mitigate.
Shared Responsibility
Ensuring the safety of client’s living environment is a shared responsibility. Concerns regarding safety should immediately be reported to the Circle of Care office and can be reported by clients, families, caregivers, Circle of Care workers or the funder involved. The CSS will develop a plan to resolve/mitigate the safety concerns and ensure that workers have direction on how to safely provide service until the risk can be resolved.
