Safety Spotlight: Travel in the Community

It is important that employees plan ahead when they are preparing to travel in the community and during their shift to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. Whether travelling by car or public transit, employees are responsible for planning ahead and making sure they are being cognizant of their surroundings, to be aware of any potential safety hazards.

Here are some general safety tips for travelling in the community:

  • Get to know the area that you are travelling in and around;
  • Plan where and how you are traveling before your trip;
  • Make sure you are paying attention to your schedule, and checking your phone several times each day;
  • Keep important telephone numbers handy (taxi service, reliable tow truck company, supervisor, office etc.);
  • Carry your work phone with you at all times and always be aware of your surroundings;
  • Watch where you are walking as you exit TTC vehicles and stations;
  • Avoid wearing headphones that will reduce your ability to hear sounds around you;
  • Call the office if you are running behind to a client visit and you need more travel time (avoid rushing to client visits).
