Preventing PSW Slips, Trips, and Falls

Why Falls Matters

Slips, trips, and falls are one of the most common causes of workplace injuries for PSWs. They can happen during transfers, bathing, housekeeping, or simply moving through a client’s home.

Following safety tips can help prevent injuries and protect you while you work.

Common Dangers

Watch for these common dangers before you begin care:

  • Wet or slippery floors
  • Loose rugs, cords, or clutter
  • Bad lighting (dark rooms or hallways)
  • Uneven flooring or stairs
  • Slippery bathrooms and showers/bathtubs
  • Unstable or unlocked equipment
  • Rushing or working while tired
  • Clients making sudden or unexpected movements

Ways to Protect Yourself

Reduce your risk of injury by following these safety tips:

  • Wear closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles.
  • Slow down, never rush.
  • Keep walkways clear.
  • Clean up spills right away.
  • Check the home for hazards before starting care.
  • Keep supplies and equipment within easy reach.
  • Use equipment safely and make sure it is secure before use.
  • Report unsafe conditions, hazards, and damaged equipment.

Before You Start Care

Ask yourself these questions before starting care:

  • Is the floor dry?
  • Are walkways clear?
  • Is there enough lighting?
  • Is the equipment secure?
  • Does the client appear steady, or might they move unexpectedly?

A quick check can help prevent injuries before they happen.

Safe Moving Tips

Follow these tips to move safely, which helps protect you from injury:

  • Do not rush.
  • Wear shoes with non-slip soles.
  • Keep both feet firmly on the floor.
  • Turn with your feet instead of twisting your back.
  • Do not lift heavy objects.
