International Repetitive Strain Injury Awareness Day
February 28 is International Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Awareness Day. RSIs affect your muscles, tendons, joints, and nerves. They develop slowly over time and often impact the hands, shoulders, neck, and lower back.
In your role, daily tasks like lifting, repositioning, pushing, pulling, bending, and reaching can increase the risk when repeated throughout a shift.
Protect yourself:
- Use mechanical aids whenever available
- Keep movements controlled and avoid twisting
- Keep loads close to your body
- Bend your knees, not your back
- Take short rest breaks when possible
- Report any discomfort early
Circle of Care’s No Lift Policy exists to protect you. You should not perform client lifts without a mechanical device. Always assess if a client can safely weight bear before a transfer and report concerns to the main office. Caring for others should never come at the cost of your own safety.

Health & Safety
Stress & Heart Health Resources
Although stress is a normal part of life, too much stress can affect your heart. Chronic stress can increase heart rate, blood pressure, and sugar levels, raising the risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also make healthy habits harder to maintain, leading to overeating, smoking, or excessive drinking.
Stressors can be major life changes, daily pressures, or ongoing struggles. Simple strategies like staying active, eating well, practicing relaxation techniques, and seeking support can help you manage stress.
Learn more about the link between heart disease and stress using the buttons below.
Winter Safety Tips – Do the Penguin Walk!
Winter weather can make it more challenging to get around safely. Snow, ice and reduced daylight hours are risk factors that can increase your risk of falls.
Watch the video above and learn how to walk safely near ice — like a penguin!
Also, consider these safety tips to reduce your risk of falls during winter:
-
Bend slightly and walk flat footed
-
Point your feet out slightly like a penguin
-
Keep your centre of gravity over your feet as much as possible
-
Watch where you are stepping
-
Take shorter, shuffle-like steps
-
Keep your arms at your sides, not in your pockets
-
Concentrate on keeping your balance
-
Go as slowly as possible
