June 15: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEEAD)

June 19: Father’s Day

June is Filipino, Italian, and Portuguese Heritage Month!

Circle of Care is excited to celebrate this and we are very proud to have so many Filipinos, Italians, and Portuguese PSWs and Homemakers who help older adults live their lives to their fullest independently.

This month, let’s recognize their efforts and achievements and celebrate many social and economical contributions they’ve made. Below are some fun facts highlighting Filipino, Italian, and Portuguese Heritage Month!

Filipino Heritage Month

  • This community is one of the fastest growing communities in all of Canada, with almost one million residents of Filipino descent.
  • Since 1992, Filipinos have been deemed as ‘independent immigrants’ which signifies that with their skills and abilities, they were a group of people who could contribute rapidly to Canadian society and the economy.
  • Did you know: Ontario is home to the largest number of Filipinos in Canada and over 81% of Ontario Filipinos reside in the Greater Toronto Area.

Italian Heritage Month

  • Canada is the home for over 1.5 million Canadians with Italian heritage
Over 75% of Italian Canadians immigrated from the rural south of Italy.
  • The majority of Italian Canadians live in cities and towns. In a 2016 census, 59% lived in Ontario, 21% lived in Quebec, and 10% were found in British Columbia.
  • Many ‘little Italy’ spots can be found in cities across Canada including Toronto.

Portuguese Heritage Month

  • Canada is home to half a million individuals of Portuguese descent and over 300 thousand individuals of Portuguese ancestry live in Ontario.
  • A 2016 census disclosed almost half of the individuals who reported to having Portuguese as their mother tongue live in Toronto, and over 15 thousand live in Montreal.
  • The Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame which is located in Toronto, Ontario aims to highlight and honour individuals of Portuguese descent who have made important contributions to the Portuguese community in Canada.

Learning the Basics: Indigenous Communities in Canada

June is National Indigenous History Month. It’s a month to acknowledge and learn about the land that we reside on, along with educating ourselves on the history and terms used by Indigenous communities. Below are some of the most common names you may hear in reference to these communities:

First Nations

Refers to individuals and communities and their governments. The term arose in the 1980s and is politically significant because it implies possession of rights arising from historical occupation and use of territory.

Metis

People with mixed European and Indigenous ancestry. It is used to describe individuals across Canada and specific communities: ‘Metis Nation.’

Inuit

Individuals who reside in Northern Canada–primarily in Nunavut, The Northwest Territories, Labrador, and Northern Quebec.

Cree (“Nehiyawak”)

They are one of the largest First Nations group found in Canada.

Champions of Care Nominations

This program is designed to recognize employees who go above and beyond their day-to-day duties, and who exemplify Circle of Care’s values.

A friendly reminder that nominations are used to determine the yearly Champions of Care Award winners. Nominations submitted by employees on behalf of their colleagues should be specific and detailed regarding why the employee deserves to be nominated.

As much as possible, you must provide examples that back up your nomination, as this helps the senior team select winners each year. Failure to provide a detailed nomination may result in your nomination not being published.
