PSW Safety: Understanding Responsive Behaviours

Responsive behaviours are actions that may happen when a person living with dementia is trying to express a need, feeling, or frustration. Understanding the reason behind the behaviour can help you respond with empathy and provide better care.

Examples:

  • biting
  • hitting/kicking
  • hurting others or themselves
  • hiding
  • wandering
  • making unexpected noises
  • becoming withdrawn

Watch this short video to learn why responsive behaviours happen and how to manage them safely and effectively.

Stay Home When You Are Sick

As flu season begins, please stay home if you are feeling unwell. If you have symptoms such as a cough, fever, sneezing, or a runny nose, notify your supervisor and do not come to work.

Staying home when sick helps:

  • Prevent the spread of flu, COVID-19, and other illnesses
  • Protect coworkers and clients who may be at higher risk
  • Support a healthier workplace for everyone
